Kahilah’s Journey…The Reward for Never Giving Up Hope is the tale of a neglected and abused Siberian Husky. Kahilah’s journey begins at the home of a back yard breeder, takes her through the city shelter in Indianapolis, Indiana, and to the foster home of Leslie Evans Kaplan in Plainfield, an Indianapolis suburb. Kahilah, being skittish and untrusting in nature, ran away from her foster home after she was there for five days. She was on the run for 295 days in Plainfield, Indiana, an Indianapolis suburb, with Leslie tracking her every step of the way. Some of the tools used to attempt capture included live traps, trail cameras, footprint tracking, puppy cry recordings, various types of food, and lost dog signs placed throughout the area. This adventure pairs an intelligent and cunning canine, and an experienced foster parent with the perseverance and determination to search daily during those nine and one-half months. The plot thickens as Kahilah had not one, but two litters of puppies out in the cold between October 2014 and January 2015. Would she be able to keep her puppies safe during a snowy and bitter cold winter and protect them from predators? Kahilah’s sightings accumulated and her territory expanded throughout a one- to two-mile radius of Leslie’s home. The undertaking included a network of animal rescue experts who supported Leslie, a local police department, and a vast following on Facebook. Leslie refused to give up hope on this terrified dog and took the steps necessary to bring Kahilah home.

I just finished reading this book about the journey Leslie embarked upon to get the now more famous Kahilah home and also her 5 puppies. I also volunteer with the rescue group ARPO that Leslie referenced in her book. I was lucky enough one time to work with Leslie and her daughter at an ARPO adoption event. I knew that she and her daughter were both very dedicated to animal rescue. I also knew of the story of Kahilah. However, I never knew the extent of the dedication and time that Leslie had put into the recovery of this very brave mama dog and her puppies. Leslie put her life on hold to get Kahilah and her puppies back home. There were many times, when I was reading this book that I was brought to tears. I have a 13 year old rescue pitbull we got from ARPO in 2004 and I cannot imagine her being out like Kahilah or what I would have done. There are just not enough words for me to describe how much I liked Leslie's truthful statements and posts about this journey. I think it is a must read for anyone who loves dogs and cats. I loved the pictures and background that Leslie provided about how she got to the point of rescuing pets and how her parents provided such a work ethic for her. She wrote from the heart and it was almost as if I could picture her out by herself in all types of weather to find her baby. Kahilah is one smart dog and took such great care of her puppies. It was great to read the follow ups on the homes and pictures of the puppies today. I am not much a writer, but I do want to say that I so enjoyed reading this book and will read it again. My husband is going to read it next. This journey was incredible and Leslie captured it so that you feel you were there. Everyone should read this book.Product details

I'm not even finished with the story, and I feel I can rate it so highly. The emotions are expressed very lovingly, and it just shows what great character she has. I only knew what I was told by word of mouth from her daughter, Krista (my best friend), but to read it so vividly warms my heart on how much everyone cared. As all of the foster animals were described with their pictures, it brought back many memories, especially ones I had forgotten.
A great read and testimonial to the dedication and love of a beautiful dog by a woman who always goes above and beyond; Leslie is a very caring and selfless person which is represented throughout this book. I encourage everyone to read this incredible journey of love, heartache and determination.
Leslie fostered a kitty I adopted from the shelter, and we stayed in touch. When her foster dog Kahilah went missing after just a few days at her home, I followed the story on Facebook. It was alternately heart-breaking and encouraging. Her book is a fantastic recollection of her work to bring this scared dog home -- with the puppies born in the wild during a particularly cold Midwest winter. If you want to be inspired or encouraged or just treated to a good story, get this book.
I loved this book. I was not on facebook at the time of Kahilah's great adventure. I found out about Kahilah from a lost poster being passed out by a young lady in our neighborhood. The sad thing is this happened in I my neighborhood that she was seen many times. I have several dogs that were rescued and this broke my heart. This shows the struggles as a fur baby owner we go thru. This shows how stressful it is and what we do to find them by putting aside our health, and everything in our life. I recommend this to anyone who loves animals, I finished it in 2 days as I could not put it down
I just finished reading Kahilah's Journey, I had followed this story on Facebook from the beginning and can not believe the determination and patience Leslie took to get Kahilah and her 5 babies home! Leslie truly never gave up even in the darkest of times. This book is highly recommended for anyone to read, especially anyone in the rescue field. Great tips too on how to get your lost pet home.

I opened the box and picked up this book, and didn’t set it down till I finished! This book has it all—suspense, surprise, determination, hope, and best of all a happy ending. I am honored to know Leslie, and her dedication to animals as a whole is incredible. Her passion and love to bring a lost dog back home is so overwhelming. I know of no one involved in animal welfare that would do what Leslie did to get this dog home safely. I am proud of the officers and many others who assisted her in the search as well. Congratulations to Leslie, and her much loved Kahilah. Kahilah, you are one lucky dog!
What a wonderful book and a great lesson of faith, dedication, and hope. This book made me cry and smile. I learned so much about foster pets and what it takes to take care of these beautiful creatures. Not to mention the heart of gold Leslie has, not too many people will do what she did. She's such a grate role model for so many of us to never loose faith no matter what or how hard the road ahead looks. Thank you for writing this book.
