I really did love this book, both on its own and as a sequel to CROWN. There were some key differences between BLADE and CROWN however.

Firstly, CROWN is a much longer book than BLADE. I know this is in part due to the sheer amount of cuts that TOR Publishing made to CROWN(on his blog Mallory mentions that the first draft sent to TOR was 450,000 words and was cut to less than 200,000. Resulting in more than 1000 pages, close to 2/3s of the original manuscript being cut from first draft to final product), Mallory has mentioned that he wanted to avoid cuts as much as possible in BLADE so he tried to write a much shorter book in the hopes that it would make it to sale being as whole as possible. There are several time jumps in BLADE where years are skipped over almost entirely, I believe this has much to do with both avoiding cuts and the cuts that almost certainly happened anyway.

Secondly, the book is quite different story-wise. BLADE focuses almost entirely on Rune as he leads an otherfolk army into war against his own people. Viel's appearances in the book are almost negligible. This is not a detraction, for the story woven is as entrancing as was CROWNS.

BLADE is a fantastic book even with its cuts and faults, and well worth the wait (TOR asked for several books for other series between CROWN and BLADE continuously pushing BLADE back despite Mallory's desire to work on it). Be warned though, Mallory himself has noted that BLADE and the next book SCOURGE are essentially one long continuous story and BLADE certainly feels like it ended too soon. Mallory has said that SCOURGE is nearly done and should be delivered by the end of this year or early next year, though when it may be published is another matter all together (BLADE was given to TOR in March of 2016 and Mallory expected that it would be published that fall, but TOR let it languish for more than 6 months before getting back to him about edits). So while SCOURGE will hopefully be published in 2018 it is impossible to say.

Overall BLADE was fantastic 9.5/10. Writing: 9/10. Story: 10/10

Blade of Empire Book Two of the Dragon Prophecy The Dragon Prophecy Trilogy Mercedes Lackey James Mallory 9780765324399 Books Reviews

The first book in this trilogy was one of the best i have ever read and i desperately awaited the next installment in a very sophisticated tale. However, installment two has the heroine for a brief moment then it's all bouncing back and forth with great time gaps with talking animals that have no depth of character. I was quite disappointed because I know this writing team is capable of so much more. Many of the scenes in crown left you feeling the rain, smelling the forest they were so well written. This one gave nothing. I do not know if the passing of five years between books let the tale grow cold in the imagination of the authors or if Tor chopped it up behind repair. Either way I am saddened.
I remember reading a year ago that the manuscript sent to the editor by Mr Mallory was around 800+ pages. What happened? Who butchered it to the degree that it became a soulless summary?...and even in that—summary that is—didn’t do a good job, since at times the story draws you in for a short period and then the language abruptly turns to the bland rhetoric of a history book.

I have been looking forward to this installment for 5 years and especially now that I’m in chemo, I was hoping for a good long distraction, a trip into one of my favorite universes! Alas, these 494 pages didn’t cut it. I’m not only upset that it it read like a history book, I’m also upset at missing what it could have been! If chopping the story to a level that it inspired absolutely no emotion to the reader, was a financial decision—mostly because people don’t read 800 page books anymore?—then in my humble opinion that was the wrong decision. They could have taken a chance; as there are a lot of people like me who don’t mind getting lost for hours in a story, feeling the joy and the sorrow of the characters as their stories unravel, oblivious to the number of pages being devoured.

I gave 4 stars because...I’m loyal that’s all, else I would have given 2. I still look forward to the 3rd installment; hope that it will not be so edited?; pray that I’ll be around to enjoy it once more, as I did the Obsidian Mountain trilogy.
As with every book this duo has written, I thoroughly enjoyed this read. Awesome world building, sensitivity to cultural nuance that makes it actually seem you are reading about vastly different cultures coming together, and realistic approaches to the physical and psychological impact of protracted war make it thoroughly immersive. As far as more specific details...

**SPOILER ALERT**

If you are looking for another installment following the day-to-day of Vielissiar, you aren’t going to get it with this book. While she features in the opening chapters, a vast majority of the book focuses on developing the story of what Runacarendalur did after he refused to pledge fealty to Vielissiar. While I missed reading more about Vielissiar, whom I find to be a strong and engaging character, this decision by the authors didn’t ruin my overall enjoyment of the book.

Runacar, as he now calls himself, ends up immersed in the culture of what we have known as “beastlings” up to this point in the Dragon Prophecy series. Mallory and Lackey present a startling alternative narrative to how the elves have presented the beastlings up to this point, which brings a satisfying sense of realism to the cultures presented in the series.

It’s easy to tell this book is beginning to answer more of the questions of what each point of Amrethron’s Prophecy is talking about. It also, however, leaves a lot of questions unanswered. Hopefully we won’t have to wait five more years to find out the answers!!

Great read!
