In "Bits & Pieces," her first Matti James mystery novel, M.A.R. Unger created an entirely new genre: The paranormal police procedural.
Oh sure, other writers have written cop stories with ghosts that played a role in them, but they do not contain the amazing amount of detail that Unger's novels do. At best they might have a crime scene tech give a superficial explanation of how he ran a test and came up with a DNA match. Unger, however, explains in amazing detail how the facial reconstruction of a murder victim is done, how evidence is collected at a crime scene and even how to make borscht that even her Russian lunch guests enjoy.
It is that attention to detail that separates Unger from other authors and makes "The Kiev Connection" more than just an interesting story with a few red herrings thrown in to keep the reader guessing until almost the final page.
For those who don't know Unger's Matti James, she's a facial reconstruction artist and the widow of a Chicago detective who died under some fairly bizarre circumstances. Determined to jump start her life, in "Bits & Pieces" she started out for California but wound up in the desert near Las Vegas after wondering if she really wanted to compete with bronzed beach bunnies in micro-bikinis when she went to the beach in her black one-piece swimsuit. It was while settling into her new home that she met her first ghost - an InBetweener who was murdered and hasn't yet gone to The Great Beyond because she still has some business to complete on Earth. Not everyone can see InBetweeners, but Matti can for reasons that are not quite clear to her.
In "The Kiev Connection" she meets more InBetweeners - murdered Russian prostitutes who are mad as hell about the fact they've been killed in extremely nasty ways. Working with the police, Matti is determined to help identify them by doing facial reconstructions and that gets her in trouble not only with the killers but also with a female Metro Las Vegas homicide detective who thinks she's getting in the way of the investigation.
On top of that, Matti's newly found love interest, the mysterious Joe Chauncy, is keeping secrets from her - big secrets.
Among them: The fact an extremely beautiful Russian hooker is living in his house.
Matti's quirky female friends - a small cadre of women who get together to work on cold cases - are back in this novel as well and they provide a little comic relief to the grim business of the murder investigations.
As in her previous novel, Unger's narrative flows smoothly and the writing - especially some of her descriptions of the desert and nearby mountains - is excellent. The plot has some nice twists and turns and her characters come alive on the page.
"The Kiev Connection" is an excellent read and a book that I highly recommend.

The Kiev Connection Matti James Mystery Series Book 2 edition by MAR Unger Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

If you had a dog like Fluffy, you might get caught up in a relationship with an inbetweener. No, not love relationship. That's with Joe, on again, off again, not sure until he saves her bacon. No, the inbetweener relationship with Abbie is like a conversation with a light fog who talks back, but just as quickly evaporates like frost in bright sunlight. Uh, inbetweener? Sorry. Thought you read M.A.R. Unger's first book Bits and Pieces where she introduces a spirit that cannot "pass on" because she has unfinished business here on earth. She doesn't know what it is. She just knows it is something that keeps her from passing on.

And good thing. Just as Abbie acted as otherworldly advisor in Bits and Pieces, so does she provide insights on the inbetweener prostitute who was brutally murdered, but must complete some task before moving on. What does Fluffy have to do with all this? Fluffy can sense the presence of a spirit when it is close by. Especially if some body or body-part is also near. This always gets Matti James---Fluffy's owner---involved. Matti is the daughter of one detective and widow of another. She is a face reconstructionist which Ms. Unger explains in exquisite detail as Matti performs the task.

But what if someone doesn't want the identity of the dead person known? Then Matti becomes a target. Matti finds herself involved in car chases---she is the one chased---shootings in which Matti is the target, and other defense manuevers. Even with this stress, Matti manages to uncover the identity of the killer. The question for you is will you be able to do so also---before she reveals the culprit. Good luck. You're going to need it while enjoying the book as you try to make that discovery before she explains it. I highly recommend you treat yourself to this pleasure. Buy the book. And read it'.
