Very easy read, thoroughly enjoyed the whole book even though it had a sad ending, but what a life he had.
It really is a book that you can't put down and at the end just sit and reflect how kind some people really can be:)

The Railway Dog The True Story of an Australian Outback Dog Olwyn M Parker 9781921596575 Books Reviews

One of the great outback characters of the late 19th century had such a passion for trains he spent 11 years riding the rails around the South Australian countryside. Bob the dog would jump on board somewhere around Terowie or Peterborough and spend the day in the company of the railway workers who became his friends and family. At night, he would go home with one of them, usually the driver. He would be treated as one of the family, given a hot meal and a warm bed for the night.

The next morning he would walk back to the platform and wait for the next train. Bob didn’t seem to mind where he was heading. He was happy with the journey, the company and the scenery. Sometimes he ended up in Broken Hill, or Port Pirie or Quorn or occasionally Sydney. Once he crossed the Nullarbor Plain to Perth. Almost everyone adored Bob, the railway dog.

His fame spread so that children would run alongside the train hoping for a glimpse of the shaggy mutt who rode high on top of the coal tender behind the engine where it was warm and he had a good view.

So treasured was he that his heavy leather collar - marked South Australian Railways - is still held at the National Railway Museum in Port Adelaide. The nameplate was made by a brass worker, Merv Lillywhite, at the request of Harry Caire, a travelling salesman and a part of Bob’s extended circle of friends.

On the brass plate are the words, “Stop me not, but let me jog, for I am Bob, the driver's dog."

These were different times.

More than a century later the extraordinary life of the very sociable dog has been re-imagined by Adelaide first-time author Olwyn Parker who heard of Bob through family connections in Peterborough. The dog would have remained too abstract a figure to write about but for the endearing photographs that still exist.

A beautifully written, delightful story, that was a page turner from start to end.
Very easy read, thoroughly enjoyed the whole book even though it had a sad ending, but what a life he had.
It really is a book that you can't put down and at the end just sit and reflect how kind some people really can be)
